Witch-hunting: 60 year old woman thrashed, burnt in Simdega
Simdega: About half a dozen persons attacked a 60-year-old lady and attempted to burn her live in Simdega district branding her as a witch on Wednesday. Simdega police on Thursday said that six persons have been held and the woman is undergoing treatment.
This is the second incident of mob attack in this district since January 4. Earlier, a Dalit man Sanju Pradhan was lynched and burnt under Kolebira police station in the district. Close to a dozen people have been arrested so far in that incident.
Yesterday’s incident occurred under Thethaitanger police station area. Officer in-charge of Thethaitanger police station Kumar Indresh said that the victim is identified as Jharo Devi and is undergoing treatment.
He said that she had gone to the house of one Florence Dungdung in her village last night to take part in condolence meeting of Dungdung’s wife, who died a week back. Dungdung and five others began thrashing her holding her responsible for his (Dungdung) wife’s death accusing her of practicing black-magic. She was also put on fire.
Police however swung into action after learning about it and rescued her. “We arrested all six persons responsible for the crime,” he said.
