Banna: Provide genome machine for Rims, health min demands from Centre

Jamshedpur: Jharkhand health minister Banna Gupta has demanded union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya genome sequencing machine to be set up at state owned Rajendra Institue of Medical Sciences (Rims) on urgent basis in the wake of Omicron, latest variant of SARS Cov 2, which is spreading across the globe at rapid pace.

Gupta placed the demand during a virtual meeting with the union minister, who on Sunday caught up with health ministers of all states over to review the Covid situation. Gupta attended the meeting from Jamshedpur.

He said, “Since Rims is now also recognised as research centre, I have demanded for genome machine on priority basis.”

Genome sequencing assumes importance to detect virus mutations. State doesn’t have any facility in this regard as a reason, it is handicapped to ascertain the vairiant of Covid in circulation currently.

But considering the rapid spread of infection at present, health experts maintain the third wave has started in the state.Again on Sunday, fresh infections crossed over 1000 mark for the second consecutive day.

Other demands included vaccination of people from the age of 12, hike in pay of sahiyas from Rs 2000, coverage of Covid patients under Ayushman Bharat yojana among others.
