Lalu to spend Holi in jail as court defers hearing

Ranchi: Jharkhand high court on Friday deferred hearing on suspension of sentencing of former Bihar CM and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad who is convicted in fodder scam cases. He is currently serving jail term in Ranchi after being recently convicted in fifth and last fodder scam case in Jharkhand related to Doranda treasury pertaining to illegal withdrawal of Rs 139 crore in 1995-96 when he was CM of Bihar.

Last month, a special CBI court in Ranchi pronounced him guilty of the crime and awarded five years jail along with Rs 60 lakh fine.

Lalu has challenged it in high court seeking quashing of the sentencing. On Friday, the court of Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh has set the date of hearing as April 1 and sought records from the lower court. This means Lalu will have to spend Holi in jail. CBI which probed the fodder scam cases and ensured conviction of various accused had pegged the total fraud worth Rs 950 crore.
