Chaibasa: ‘Fake’ recruitment drive spurs clash between villagers & police, many injured

Jamshedpur: At least a dozen villagers and policemen sustained injuries following a clash between the two in Ladurabasa village under Kursi panchayat under Mufassil police station in West Singbhum district on Sunday.

The tension flared between villagers and police owing to an alleged recruitment drive that was being underway at Chaibasa government college in the area by one Chandra Shekhar Dangil, who claimed to be the head of the ‘Kolhan Government Estate’, which police dubbed it as an illegal and unconstitutional. The recruitment drive was for teachers and police service by the purported outfit for what they called was for the proposed separate state named ‘Kolhan Government State’.

Sources claimed that a section of tribals across scores of villagers in this part of Kolhan area here have declared their region as ‘autonomous’ and a separate state. Kolhan is among the five commissionaries in Jharkhand.

Since 7 am today, the recruitment drive was underway when district administration pressed team to take stock of the situation. According to an official release released by the district administration later in the evening, after local police and administrative officials detained about few people from the spot and seized host of paraphernalia such as laptops, mobiles, register, printers and papers, over 200 villagers ghearoed the police station with lathis and traditional weapons.

“Around 2pm, the crowd began shouting slogans against the government and administration and later began pelting stones. To disperse the crowd and control the situation, police had to use mild force and release tear gas shells. During the melee, a few villagers and policemen sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at local sadar hospital,” read the official statement.
