Hockey: Hosts Jharkhand storms into quarter-final of 11th jr national meet

Ranchi: Jharkhand on Sunday entered quarter finals of the ongoing 11th national hockey women (junior) championship in Simdega by beating Kerala by 10-0.

Jharkhand’s Deepika Soren scored the first goal in 3rd minute. Seven minutes later, Rajni Kerketta hit the second goal in the 10 minute. Jharkhand players managed to hit through the weak defense of the opponents at suitable ease. Rajni and Mahima Tete scored three goals each while Deepika netted two goals. Alin Dungung and Amrita Minj too joined the party by hitting one goal each.

Manoj Konbegi, president of Hockey Simdega said that the entire team is on a positive frame of mind after winning their both the matches to enter quarterfinal.

In other matches today, Haryana beat Assam by 23 goals, Punjab thrashed Delhi by 6-1, Karnataka won over Pudduchery by 12-1. Haryana and Maharashtra too ensured berths for the quarter finals.

Simdega district administration is also allowing spectators to the Astroturf stadium for live viewing of the matches since Saturday. Only 350 people per day are given entry tickets to those who are fully vaccinated. Officials said that the move is to restrict any chances of spurt in covid-19 cases.

Simdega is hosting national level meet for the second time this year amid the ongoing pandemic. In March, it successfully organized 11th sub junior women nationals. The current tournament began on October 20 and will end on 29. A total of 26 teams from different states are taking part in the prestigious event which will also pave way for players to get selected in the junior women national team.
