Hockey: Jharkhand girls romp into finals
Ranchi: Maintaining its winning streak, hosts Jharkhand stormed into the finals of the 11th hockey India junior women championship in Simdega by beating Maharashtra by 3-1 on Thursday. This is state team’s hat-trick moment in the final of the big ticket event, said hockey Jharkhand officials. On the other hand, Haryana too defeated Chandigarh by 3-2 to cement its place in the final. Jharkhand will take on Haryana for the title clash from 3pm on Friday.
Jharkhand’s all three goals came in form of penalty corners in 14, 42 and 50th minute of the game while Maharashtra stuck its solitary goal in the 17th minute. An aggressive Jharkhand however restricted them to play defensive right from the start of the game but managed to pick the nets at regular intervals to outshine the rivals.
Hockey Jharkhand president Bhola Nath Singh said that going by the performance of their team, they are sure of lifting the champions trophy.
“The players have been on a winning streak since start of the tournament and it’s just a matter of one final big match. Even though two best teams have made it for the finals, our players are in good shape and mind frame. We are hoping of a memorable outing tomorrow,” he said.
Hockey Simdega president Manoj Konbegi on the other hand informed that the final will be played from 3pm tomorrow. State sports minister Hafizul Hassan will be present as the chief guest. During the opening of the games on October 20, chief minister Hemant Soren inaugurated the meet and rolled out several projects for promotion of the game in Simdega, regarded as the nursery of hockey. “The match for the fourth position between Chandigarh and Maharashtra will be played from 9am in the morning,” said Konbegi.
