Hockey: Jharkhand girls thrash Punjab to enter semis of 11th national junior meet

Ranchi: Jharkhand on Tuesday stormed into the semi-final by thrashing Punjab by 6-2 in the ongoing 11th national junior women tournament, which is underway in Simdega district. Jharkhand’s Elina Dungdung led the charge by hitting three goals in 31, 47 and 52minute. Rajni Kerketta smashed two goals in 49and 57 minute while Deepika Soren hit one goal in 39 minute to take the team’s tally to 6. Opponent team’s Kamapreet Kaur and Harpreet Kaur only managed one goal each in 37 and 54 minute. Haryana and Chandigarh too proceeded to semi-finals by winning their quarter matches.

President of Hockey Simdega, Manoj Konbegi maintained that Jharkhand has entered semi-final stage of this tournament for the 10th time.

State hockey outfit is also hoping that a few of their players will get selected in the national junior squad based on their performance in this meet as selectors too are watching the game with keenness.

Few years back, this year’s Olympian and part of team India (women hockey) Salima Tete earned her place in the national team through this tournament, said officials. 

Hockey Jharkhand president Bholanath Singh too congratulated the team. “Jharkhand has always been regarded for its hockey talents and it’s encouraging for all of us that all our teams are doing exceptionally well across all formats for last few years,” he opined.
