Hockey: Simdega girls in Indian squad for junior world cup in SA
Ranchi: Three hockey players from Simdega, considered as Jharkhand’s nursery for hockey, have been named for upcoming junior women’s world cup scheduled to be held in South Africa from December 5-16 next month. The state based players, who are part of 18 member squad announced by Hockey India include Salima Tete, Sangita Kumar and Beauty Dungdung, said hockey Jharkhand officials.
Sangita and Beauty are from Karangaudi village in remote Simdega and Salima is from Badkichhapar. Notably, Salima was part of the Indian women team which scripted history in Tokyo Olympics this year even as they missed out on bronze by a whisker.
Hockey Jharkhand president Bholanath Singh termed the developments as increasing foothold of state players in national circuit. “Our players, specially the women team both senior and junior have been doing well at national meets as a result of which we are regularly cementing our position in national squad in last few years,” he said.
Hockey Simdega president Manoj Konbegi added, “True to its reputation, Simdega is churning out national players despite this place being one of the remotest in the state. The perseverance and grit with which our players are committed for the game speak for itself.”
Besides being the first female player from Simdega to represent Olympics, Salima has also helmed Indian team in 2018 during Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. The team ended with silver. Sangita and Beauty on the other hand were part of the junior women Indian team which toured Chile this year for two nation series and returned by winning the game 5-0.
