International race walking meet in Ranchi in Feb

Ranchi: Come February 2022, state capital Ranchi is again set to host prestigious international race walking championship at landmark Morabadi area. Jharkhand Athletics Association (JAA) on Tuesday announced of receiving the hosting rights for 5th international and 9th national open race walking championship on February 5 onwards. “It will be a two day event,” JAA president Madhukant Pathak said. Famed long jumper Anju Bobby George will be the main attraction in capacity of a special guest for the event.

This will be the third time that JAA has been entrusted to host the tournament in Ranchi. Before this, it hosted it in February 2020 and 2021. “From both the event, as many as four players got qualified for Tokyo Olympics, which explains the importance of this championship,” he said, adding that the upcoming event will enable players to qualify for next year’s Asian and Commonwealth games.

A total of 300 players both from India and abroad are expected to take part in the event. While the covid-19 pandemic is still not over and Omicron variant has only triggered fresh concerns, but authorities said that they will follow all the covid-19 protocols. “Even last time when we held the tournament, it was in the middle of the pandemic but everything remained smooth and none was infected. This time too, we are preparing in advance keeping health safety aspects in mind to put up a flawless event,” he said.
