Simdega: Haryana clinches 11th jr national hockey title, Jharkhand wins hearts

Ranchi: Haryana emerged as the champions while hosts Jharkhand fell short of the eureka moment finishing with silver in a keenly fought finals at the 11th national junior women hockey tournament which concluded in Simdega on Friday.

Even as hosts Jharkhand took 1-0 lead over Haryana by smashing a penalty corner in the 5th minute but the visitors bounced back hitting three goals in 9, 19 and 21st minute. By end of the match time, scores remained 3-2. From Jharkhand, Deepika Soreng and Ropali Kumar hit one goal each. On the other hand, Maharashtra won bronze by beating Chandigarh by a 6-2.

Jharkhand’s coach Pratima Barwa interacting with reporters post match said that they failed to utilize few opportunities to hit through the nets which cost them dear. “The girls however played their best but it was simply not our day,” she said, adding that throughout the tournament, the team remained undefeated.

Hockey Simdega president Manoj Konbegi too lauded the girls. “We played good but the best team won. It’s part of sports,” he opined. 

State sports minister Hafizul Hassan was the chief guest for the concluding ceremony today while chief minister Hemant Soren did the honours during the opening ceremony on October 20. A total of 21 states participated in the, which was earlier scheduled to be held here in April. The second wave of covid-19 had led to the postponement of the game.

For Simdega, considered as hockey nursery, it was for the second time this year that it gained an opportunity to host the prestigious national meets. In March this year, it hosted 11th sub-junior hockey national meet. The state hockey outfit as well as the local district administration ensured successful conduct of the tournament despite the ongoing covid-19 pandemic.
